Following Diabetes Action's advocacy campaign, September - December 2010, seeking a national foot-screening programme for people with diabetes, the HSE has allocated €1 million for the introduction of a "national foot-care programme" which will be staffed initially by 16 whole-time-equivalent (WTE) posts.

The allocation has been included in the HSE's National Service Plan 2011. The €1 million (i.e. 1 years initial funding for the service) and 16 WTE posts will be divided among the 4 HSE regions. Details of how this programme will operate remain to be finalised. This means that a foot-care service will be developed to meet the needs of people with diabetes in your part of the country.

Your advocacy e-mail, sent to your local political representatives through www.diabetesaction.ie, played an essential role in highlighting the lack of podiatry services and helped to secure funding to develop a national foot-care programme.
